Graduated from Schuylkill Haven High School (1952), where he was an outstanding basketball player and captain of the team during his senior year, Dick was the top scorer on his basketball team and was selected for the Schuylkill County All-Star team and the Bloomsburg High School Tournament All-Star team (1951 & 1952). He received a basketball scholarship from Muhlenberg College, where he was a three-year starter, and later played semi-pro basketball with the Schuylkill Haven Black Knights. He was named the head basketball coach at West Reading High School (1960) for eight seasons before the West Reading/Wyomissing merger (1968) and remained the head coach until 1982 for a total of 22 years as head basketball coach at West Reading and Wyomissing high schools. Dick coached the West Reading Cowboys, led by Ron Krick, to the state title (1961) and directed his teams to 17 playoff appearances, winning two district titles (1961, 1965) and three Berks County titles (1971, 1973, 1975). His overall combined coaching record was 362-188, making Coach Sherry the third winningest basketball coach in Berks County history.
