Football

An outstanding athlete and graduate of Governor Mifflin High School (1962), John was an All-Berks and All-Tri County football selection at halfback for the Mustangs (1960 & 1961). He led the football team, along with fellow PSHOFBC inductee Mike Klahr, to a 9–1 record (1961) and was named to the Pennsylvania All-State and “Big-33” teams. He was a recipient of the Ron Kickline Award as the top senior football player in Berks County. John received a football scholarship to the University of Virginia, where he was a three-year starter at receiver and was co-captain of the Cavaliers as a senior (1965). He is one of the top all-time receivers for Virginia, completing his career as their all-time number one receiver. As of induction, he still ranks sixth on the all-time receivers list. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions, but his pro football career was brought to a halt by injuries. John later returned as a coach to Virginia, where he earned his law degree.
