A football and track star at Wyomissing High School and Albright College, was named one of Berks County’s Outstanding Athletes from 1900–1952. At Wyomissing, he won six county titles in the high jump, pole vault, and javelin, placed seven times in District III championships (1945–46), and held school records in the pole vault and javelin for over 25 years. Highlights of his high school career include selection to the first-team All-Berks football team and winning the state title in the pole vault and javelin. At Albright College, he was a four-year letterman in football and track, led the nation in punting (all divisions), still holds the Albright record for the longest punt (89 yards), and was named to the Associated Press All-State Collegiate Football Team. One of the nation’s top javelin throwers, he won the Middle-Atlantic Collegiate, Mid-Atlantic AAU, Eastern competitions, and the Eastern Intercollegiate Javelin Championship (ICIA) in 1949. Al was the first Albright athlete to achieve such honors and still holds Albright’s javelin record. He was inducted into the Albright Sports Hall of Fame in 1949.
