An all-around athlete at Reading High School, competing in basketball, baseball, and cross country. He went on to be a three-year starter in basketball at Princeton University (1965–67), during which the Tigers compiled a 64–14 record. He had the distinction of being a teammate of the legendary Bill Bradley, who later played for the New York Knicks. Walters served as captain of the Princeton basketball team his senior year, leading the Tigers to a 25–3 record, and was named to the All-Ivy League first team, the All-American first team for players 6 feet and under, and received honorable mention All-American honors. After graduating, he pursued a coaching career, serving as head coach at Providence University, Dartmouth Union College, and Middlebury, and as an assistant coach at Lehigh, Princeton, and Dartmouth. Gary also served on the staff of the U.S. Olympic Trials Committee and was named “Ethics Fellow” by the Institute of International Sport. He is the Managing Director of Seaward Management Corporation and helps host the World Scholar-Athletes Game in Newport, RI. He has the distinction of being one of two Berks County residents to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated (Feb. 27, 1967), alongside Chris Thomforde, current president of Moravian University. Gary retired as the athletic director at Princeton University serving in that position for 20 years from 1994-2014.
