Reading High School football and baseball star. Led Knights to East Penn title. Top-rated pitcher for Gregg Post Legion team. Had 9-1 record for Clover Farms team. As a youngster, played for Stony Creek and Pendora Midgets. Signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943. Pitched first pro game vs. New York Giants at Polo Grounds vs. Carl Hubble. Pitched no-hitter for U.S. Navy team. Won West Coast service title. Instrumental in getting Phillies to Reading as a farm team. Had an overall 84-67 record in minors with Utica, Wilmington, Omaha, Houston and Beaumont. Once was MVP of Western League. President of Reading Hot Stovers (Banquet Chairman for twenty-five years).
