Reading’s “Pitching Policeman”. Played for St. Louis Cardinals (1921-25) under coach Branch Rickey. Served on Reading police force for 34 years (1917-51). Played for Houston and Syracuse. Played for a number of local title teams such as the Robeson's, Rising Sun, Hamburg, Topton and Boyertown. While playing for St. Louis Cardinals he was a teammate of Rogers Hornsby. Had the best batting average among Cardinal's pitchers – .333 in 1922. Barnstormed east coast when past 40 years of age. Turned down requests of New York Giants’ John McGraw to return to major leagues.
