Harvey, Sr. was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Hamburg High School in the mid-1940s. All-County in soccer, baseball and basketball. Second player in Berks scholastic ranks to have scored 300 points in one season – scored 47 points in one game for the Hawks. Outstanding amateur baseball and basketball player in Berks and Lebanon Counties. Won four batting titles in Berks Recreation and Lebanon Valley Leagues (lifetime batting average of .390). Player-manager for seven baseball teams that won titles for Hamburg, Bethel and Strausstown. Coached youth baseball for many years in the Hamburg area. Founder and charter member of the Hamburg Athletic Association. Organized Berks Blue Mountain Little League.
