Harold “Jazz” Kase

Jazz was a player, coach and official. Attended Reading High School and played varsity basketball and baseball (1936-37). Captain of baseball team in 1937 and led the team with .379 average. Playing American Legion baseball (1936), he hit .543 for the Keystone Juniors. State Legion Champions (1938), he had an average of .526. Played professionally for Logan, WV in the Mountain State League (1940-41). All-League selection (1941 and 1947) in Miami Beach, Florida Instructional League. Managed Galax, VA to a pennant in Blue Ridge League (1948). Umpired for 15 years (1949-64) and was a member of the Berks County Umpires Association. He coached the American Legion Keystone Juniors for 24 years (1953-76). His teams won several county and district championships. Selected to coach East vs. West in State Legion All-Star game (1966-67). Led Class A City Basketball League in scoring (1939). Member of the YMCA National Basketball champions (1940). Played shortstop for Clover Farms (1946), the undefeated city baseball champions. Inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame (1976). In 1978, he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Berks County Basketball Old-timers. Served his country in the U.S. Army (1941-45) in the European Theatre and won four Battle Stars.
