Richard was one of the greatest all-around athletes from the Conrad Weiser school district area. Starter in baseball and basketball for Womelsdorf High School. Won County baseball title (1933). Led County in scoring in basketball. All-Berks in basketball and baseball (1934). His Robesonia Legion team lost to the Reading Keys 2 games to 1 (in the second game, at Lauer’s Park, he hit for the cycle in a 16-7 win over the defending state champs). As a high school senior, attended Riverside Military Academy in Georgia. Led coach E.M. Mooney’s Kaydets to 19-1 basketball record. Led the academy with a .450 average in baseball and was a top scholar/athlete. Signed with the Boston Red Sox by Harry Leibold. Played for Charlotte in the Piedmont League and batted .353 (1935). Attended Albright College (1936). Later attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Captain of the Penn baseball team. Played shortstop and was the leading hitter for the Quakers (.410). Had three hits in his last game for Penn as they beat Princeton 13-4 before 5,000 Alumni Day fans. Named to first team All-Ivy League as third baseman. Led the Lebanon Valley League with .379 average (1938). In post-WWII era, led West Lawn Owls to Berks softball title. Became the first manager of Bernville (C. Anspach Post) American Legion team (1948).
