Arlan Baver

Fixture in Berks County as a teacher, coach, athletic administrator at Hamburg High School for 28 years. Coached soccer and basketball (1944-49). His soccer teams won five straight Northern Division championships and five County championships (1944-48). His basketball teams won three straight Northern Division championships (1944-47). His baseball team won the Northern Division championship (1946). Outstanding athlete at Ontelaunee High School in Leesport where he played soccer, basketball, baseball and track. Set many Berks County scoring records in basketball including 306 points in 12 games. Hit over the .500 mark in each of his two seasons of baseball. A stand-out in track, he won the 880 at the annual Albright and Kutztown meets (1925). Attended Franklin and Marshall Academy (1925-26), where he won letters in basketball, track, soccer, and cross country and was awarded the Franklin and Marshall trophy for outstanding athlete. Entered Kutztown State Teachers College (1926) and continued to stand out in basketball, baseball and track. His 711 points in four seasons of basketball set a school record. Played semi-pro basketball with Ashland in the Penn State League, Carpenter Steel in the Tri-County League and also was with a number of independent teams in Berks County. Played minor league baseball for Waynesboro (St. Louis Cardinal’s minor league team) in the Blue Ridge League. Played baseball with Palmyra in the Anthracite League; Robesonia and Bernville in the Lebanon Valley League; Kutztown and West Lawn in the Berks Rec. League; New Holland in the Tri-County League and Bethlehem in the East Penn League.
