One of the best all-around athletes to attend West Reading High School, graduating in 1954 after earning 12 varsity letters for the Cowboys. He was named MVP and top football player his senior year and also led his teams in scoring for basketball and batting in baseball. His career total of 48 touchdowns stood as a Berks County record for 20 years, including a five-touchdown game against Wyomissing. He played on an unbeaten football team in 1952 and helped the team win 16 straight games from 1952–53 under Coach Ray Linn. Ciervo earned a full scholarship to Syracuse University, lettering three years in football, playing in the 1957 Cotton Bowl, and serving as understudy to the legendary Jim Brown for two years. After college, he coached football and baseball at Warwick High School and spent 25 years at Muhlenberg High School, including three years as head coach. He also played baseball for Wernersville in the Lebanon Valley Baseball League.
