All Around

An outstanding all-around athlete at Mohnton High School from 1938 to 1941, he excelled in multiple sports. He was the top scorer at the Albright Invitational track meet in 1941, won the Central Division basketball scoring title, and earned a spot on the first All-County basketball team the same year. As a baseball player, he was the top pitcher for Mohnton’s divisional championship team in 1939 and captured the county batting title in 1941. He also contributed to three divisional soccer championships from 1939 to 1941. Later, he won the City Industrial amateur golf title in 1971 and distinguished himself in softball for the Mohnton Fire Company. In basketball, he led the Berks Rec. League in scoring with 382 points in 1942 and 1949, played on championship teams for Leibernecht and Bendix Aviation in Philadelphia, and won the Quaker City scoring title in 1945. He competed on title teams for Clover Farms (1946–47), Gibraltar, and Manhattan in the Lebanon Valley League, where he won the batting title with a .500 average in 1953. He also played on Terre Hill’s championship team in Lancaster County (1948) and participated in professional baseball in Florida and Georgia, competing in Tallahassee (1940–42) and Ocala (1953).
