A 1960 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School, Heilman was an outstanding football player, starting every game from his freshman through senior year and earning selections to the All-County, All-State, and All-Tri-County teams. He received an athletic scholarship to George Washington University, where he was co-captain his senior year and named to the All-Division I team in 1965, graduating with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education in 1966. As head wrestling coach for 25 years, he amassed a 252-138-1 record, coaching 23 Sectional Champions and three state-place winners, and leading his team to the Berks County Wrestling Title in 1987.
