A1931 graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, was a foundational figure in Berks County athletics. In the 1930s, he organized Hillside football and baseball teams and went on to play amateur baseball for 16 years with teams including Ajax, Hillside, Socialists, Pendora, VVV’s, Penn-Reading Supply, and Clover Farms—the 1946 Clover Farms team went undefeated at 32-0. McLaughlin coached the Clover Farms team for many years and served as head baseball coach at Central Catholic High School for 23 years (1947–1969), winning the Philadelphia Suburban Catholic League titles in 1960–61 and 1964. Beyond coaching, he was a football official for 30 years, served as a PIAA rules interpreter, banquet chairman for football officials for 35 years, and football commissioner for 13 years. He also held leadership roles as president of the City-County Baseball League and was an avid bowler. McLaughlin was honored as Sportsman of the Year in 1983 by the Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, where he was also a charter member, and received the Hot Stovers Award for 26 years of dedicated service in 1970.
