A 1961 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a 1966 graduate of Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He served as a teacher, coach, and chair of the Reading Junior High School English Department for more than 25 years. Mike was named Outstanding Senior Athlete along with Mike Raszkiewicz and scored 1,334 career points in two seasons, receiving Honorable Mention All-State honors in 1960 and 1961. He was the MVP of the Philadelphia Suburban Catholic League during his senior year. He played four seasons of baseball and basketball at Mt. St. Mary’s, was twice named Mason-Dixon Player-of-the-Week in baseball, and was a member of the 1962 NCAA Division II National Championship team, playing in three NCAA postseason championships. Mike has been a nationally recognized basketball official since 1966, served as an NCAA official for 30 years, officiated the 1985 Division II Championship game, and worked PIAA State Championships from 1988 to 1990. He was named Berks County Official-of-the-Year from 1975 to 1977 and was inducted as a Distinguished Alumnus at Mt. St. Mary’s in 1978 and Central Catholic High School in 2005. He has served as Commissioner and Interpreter for IAABO, the world’s largest basketball officiating organization, for 40 years. Mike became a member of the Executive Committee of the Reading–Berks Basketball Old-Timers in 1985 and became president in 2000, a position he still holds. He was elected City Councilman for the City of Reading in 2000, awarded the prestigious Honorary Coaches Award in 2006, and inducted into the IAABO Lifetime Membership Hall of Fame in Rockville, Maryland, in May 2007. He served as Director of the Annual Ron Regar Swim for five years and, upon retirement, was inducted into the Golf Leaf Club of Berks County in 2003. Mike is also a recipient of the Bob Harbach and George Zeppos Memorial Awards for his contributions to the game of basketball, has served as a board member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Berks Chapter, and is married to Kathy (Hanner), with whom he has five daughters and seven grandchildren.
