Conrad Dettling

A 6'5" center for Reading High School who won the Central Penn Basketball League scoring titles in 1948 and 1949 and was named second-team All-State in 1948. He also played baseball and football for the Red Knights and went on to play three years of basketball and baseball for the Albright Lions, graduating in 1953. Dettling served as captain of the baseball team and co-captain of the basketball team in 1953, scored 30 points against Bethlehem Liberty in 1949, and was called the top player in the state by legendary Allentown coach J. Birney Crum. He scored 24 points for Albright against Seton Hall, outplaying the Pirates’ 7-foot center Walter Dukes. Dettling also played three years for the Gregg Post American Legion baseball team, including the 1947 State Title team, and later played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals system with Hot Springs, Arkansas. He served as a Major League scout for the Cleveland Indians for 17 years from 1981 to 1999, was inducted into the Pennsylvania American Legion Hall of Fame in 1996 and was honored by Mid-Atlantic Major League Baseball scouts with a special achievement award in 1998 as one of the top scouts in professional baseball. Outside of sports, he worked in product development for Boyertown Packaging and Polymer for 39 years
