A basketball, baseball, and softball official for 51 years and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in York, PA, in 1984. He coached the Reading Crystallettes softball team to two regional titles and one state title and also coached the Breeze Inn girls softball team to a state championship. He officiated in the U.S. Army during World War II and later worked games in the Central Penn, Ches-Mont, and East Penn leagues. He served as commissioner of the Berks Independent Softball League and was director of the Reading Class A Softball League from 1942 to 1950. Young made the NBA officials’ backup list and officiated in the Eastern Pro League and Big 9 alongside Yogi Strom, Steve Honzo, and Woozy Smith. He was honored for outstanding performance and service by the Pennsylvania Independent Softball Association in 1982.
