All Around

Don Bertram graduated Reading High School in 1956. Played three years on the varsity basketball team, scoring 853 points and averaged 18.3 PPG as a senior. Second-team All-State player, captain of the team and runner-up as high-scorer in the Central Penn League. The Harrisburg Patriot labeled him best two-hand set shot in Pennsylvania. He scored 30 points in a game twice; at Allentown’s Little Palestra and at Hershey Arena in a CPC title game. The Red Knights won two Central Penn titles and two District III titles when he was on the team. Don never played on a JV team, only varsity, in basketball and baseball during six years of junior and senior high school. He once scored 36 points in a junior high game and led the junior high league in scoring two years. Played on a number of city title teams over the years including: East Reading Cage, Denny’s Café, Charmer’s Corner and 7th & Willow. Played briefly with the Reading Keys in the professional Eastern League. Don was also captain of the Reading High baseball team and played Legion ball, winning the batting title with a .409 average. Played two years in the Boston Red Sox minor league system. Locally, he played recreation ball with St. Donato’s, winning a title, and Newmanstown of the Lebanon Valley League.
