Three-sport athlete at Northeast Junior High School and Reading High School, graduating in 1942. Named Top Athlete at Reading (1942). A three-year varsity player in football (quarterback), baseball (third base) and basketball. Served three years in the US Army during WWII. Attended Albright College and played quarterback for the Lions (1946). Played guard for the Albright basketball team for three seasons and won the Mid-Atlantic title (1948-49). Played Legion baseball for Gregg Post. He also played baseball for Denver in the Lancaster County League and for Clover Farms. Played pro ball for Galax, VA in the Blue Ridge League.
