Great all-around athlete and graduate of Shillington High School (1945). He played football, basketball, baseball and track all four years of high school. He played left end for coach Bill Firing’s unbeaten 8-0 football team as a junior and was their leading scorer with 58 points. He was top scorer on the varsity basketball team. He batted .737 for the baseball team his junior year and won two Central Division titles while on the team. He was outstanding in track, winning Berks County titles in the 110 low hurdles (13.3) and the pole vault (11'3"). Both titles were good enough for third overall in the state. He was the last four-letter athlete at Shillington and was voted top athlete (1945). Served in the US Army Air Force (1945-46). He had a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers; signing with Detroit. He played at Hagerstown, MD, Thomasville, GA, Flint, MI and Rome, NY in the Detroit farm system. He also played for the Adamstown Hatters in the Lebanon Valley League and the Painter’s Club and Parish (with coach Babe Fidler). He was named president of the Lebanon Valley League (1960). He was one of the founders of the Adamstown Sportsmen Association. He managed midget baseball in the Adamstown area for many years and also held baseball clinics for the youth of the Adamstown area during the winter months at the YMCA.
