Outstanding football and basketball player for Reading High School in the late 1940s. Played end on the Reading grid squad that tied Steelton High for the CPC title with a 7-2-1 record. Started on the basketball team. Played football at West Chester University for coach Glenn Killinger on the unbeaten team (1952) and state title teams (1952-53). A three-year starter for the Rams at end, winning 25 games, including beating Albright College in the Pretzel Bowl, 32-9 (1951). Head coach of Governor Mifflin High School’s boys basketball team for two decades (1958-76) with an overall record of 260-154 which then ranked fifth in Berks County history. The Mustangs were 19-3 (1963), 18-3 (1964), 28-5 (1976) and won three Berks West titles. He was an end coach in football at Governor Mifflin when they won four Tri-County titles. He started the golf program at Governor Mifflin (1963) and was a golf star himself while at West Chester State. Doc Silva picked Kautter as the All-Time Collegiate end from Berks County. He has coached a number of players who went on to become coaches themselves including: Jeff Gamber, Denny Werner, Rick Bausher and Dave Angstadt.
