Wilson High School’s Top Athlete of the First Half- Century excelled in track, becoming Wilson’s first State Champion by winning the high jump (1945). Among his many accomplishments in track are: Three-time County high jump champion, two-time County discus champion, County mile-relay champion, District high jump, mile relay and discus champion (1945-46). Also in District competition, finished second in the high jump and fifth in the discus (1946). Jim established many district and county records. After playing for the Camp Lejune Marines, where he played three sports and led the football and basketball teams in scoring, Jim enrolled at Lock Haven S.T.C. and played four sports, excelling in football and track where he was a dominant figure in the high jump and discus. He had a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles (1955). During the 1950s, Jim led Central Tire, West Lawn Owls and Charmer’s Corner basketball teams to several Berks Rec. League championships. He was selected as one of the “Athletes of the Century” for his track exploits (1952) and is a member of the Wilson Sports Hall of Fame.
