A graduate of Governor Mifflin High School (1965), Kim was the Berks County champion in the broad jump and the triple jump. He was the first Pennsylvania high school athlete to long jump over 24 feet (24'3½") at a District III meet (1965). He attended Furman University, Greensville, SC, where he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.5 seconds which was the fastest 100 clocking at that time. The 9.5 second 100-yard dash is the fastest by anyone in Berks County and is still a record at Furman University. Another record he established at Furman was in the triple jump (51'10") (1969). Kim was the Southern Conference triple jump champion (1967-69), Penn Relays triple jump champion (50'1¼") and Florida Relays long and triple jump champion (1969). He placed third in the triple jump at the NCAA indoor championships (1968), third in the NCAA outdoor track championships (1969) and was the Dogwood Relay Carnival triple jump champion (1969). Selected as an All-American by conference coaches and officials (1968 & 1969).
