A graduate of Governor Mifflin High School, excelling in baseball and basketball. Named to first-team All-County baseball team as a pitcher (1963). After graduating from Penn State University, where he played freshman baseball and basketball and was on the handball team, he went on to a distinguished amateur career. He played for the West Lawn American Legion team, the Reading handball team and in the Lebanon Valley Baseball League. He won the YMCA State Handball Championship (1975) and was the Pennsylvania State singles and doubles champion. Coached at Schuylkill Valley High School (1968- 99) where he had 461 career varsity team wins while coaching baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball, girls tennis and boys and girls cross country. He also coached several junior high school sports teams. During his years as the varsity baseball coach, he posted 255 career wins with 18 consecutive winning seasons, including three division championships and a county title (1976). In boys basketball, his squad had the first winning season at Schuylkill Valley High School (1973) and won a division championship (1975). He posted 119 wins as girls basketball coach and won a division championship (1989).
