A graduate of Reading High School and was one of the most popular stars ever to perform on local basketball courts. Dave was the center on the famous Regar’s Sweet Shop team that won the national YMCA title (1939). During his three years with the team, he averaged 12 PPG for the “Kandy Kids” while they posted an overall record of 144-8.
Some of his teammates were Pete Yousaitis, “Froggy” Seitzinger, Ed Wisner, Bob Rhoads, Kenny Hopkins, Abe Dracha and Jessie Kern. During their three-year stint, the team averaged 78 PPG while holding their opponents to 44 PPG. This was during a period when high scoring games were usually in the 20s. Dave was seriously injured in WWII during the “Battle of the Bulge” and was paralyzed from the waist down. He spent many months in British and American hospitals. On March 9, 1946, many of his teammates organized a benefit game for him at Northwest Junior High School.
