An outstanding athlete at Wilson High School, John earned eight varsity letters while competing in football, basketball and track. He was selected to the team quarterback and was nominated to play in the “Big 33” game (1969). He was part of Wilson’s undefeated team (1967) and led the Bulldogs to an undefeated 10-0 season (1969). John played football at Gettysburg College for four years and was the starting quarterback during his junior and senior years. He was the head football coach at Muhlenberg High School for 20 years (1989-2008), where he posted a career record of 167-50-4. During those 20 seasons, the Muhls never had a losing season, made nine District III playoff appearances and played in two District III AAA championship games. His squad won ten Berks Inter-County League Championships. John was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame during the Big 33 weekend in Hershey, PA (2007).
