An outstanding baseball player who attended Reading High School, Mike played on many city and county teams, including the 18th Ward Democrats. He won many city and county batting titles and was considered by Dick Gernert to be the finest hitter in Berks County. He hit .451 (1942), .404 (1948) and .518 (1956). He played in the Interstate League at Pokomo City, MD and in the Coastal League at Tarboro, NC. He was being considered for promotion to Baltimore, MD of the International League when he joined the US Army. While at Fort Benning, he was the captain of the baseball team. Mike served in a decorated anti-aircraft brigade in Europe. His unit received many citations, including one from General Patton, for shooting down record numbers of German planes. A bronze star was among the many awards he received. Mike was honored for the 50th anniversary of the Reeser’s All-Stars playing the first game at Municipal Stadium in 1951 (2001).
