Graduated from Wilson High School (1996) and was the Pennsylvania Female Swimmer of the Year (1994 & 1995). She won 16 PIAA District III gold medals and was the District III champion four consecutive years in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Kristy won five state championships in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, 400 free relay and was twice the Pennsylvania High School Swimmer of the Year. While at Wilson, she broke 62 individual and relay swimming records. She continued her swimming career at the University of Georgia, where she was a member of the world record 400 medley relay team and the 100 breast and 400 medley relay World Championship team (1998). She was the NCAA Woman of the Year (2000), NCAA Top 13 recipient, an NCAA Division I champion eight times, an NCAA All- American 24 times, broke eight American records and earned a Silver Medal in the Olympic Games. In addition to her other accomplishments, Kristy was a Collegiate Academic All-American.
